Mayfields and Sharps Named in the Early Tax
Records of Jefferson County and Shelby County, Kentucky
Jefferson County, one of the three original shires of
Kentucky, was created in 1780, when Kentucky was still part of Virginia. Shelby
County was formed in 1792 from the eastern part of Jefferson County. That same
year (1792), Kentucky was admitted into the Union as the Nation's fifteenth
State.
The family of Micajah Mayfield and those of his brothers,
Elijah and James, appear to have lived in the "Long Run" (northeastern branch of
Floyd's Fork) region of eastern Jefferson County, near the border of Jefferson
with Shelby County. The earliest tax records that have survived for Jefferson
County KY begin with the year 1789; for Shelby County the earliest year is 1792.
Near the Mayfields of Long Run, lived a certain John Sharp; In
July 1799, John married Eleanor, a daughter of James Mayfield. Eleanor was John
Sharp's second wife; by his first wife he had several sons who also show up on
the Jefferson County tax lists. As the Sharp and Mayfield families would
subsequently become linked by several additional marriages, it is useful to also
track those Sharps who are close relations of John Sharp. As the following tax
data will illustrate, after 1795, the Mayfields were frequently located and
taxed within the bounds of Shelby County.
