Isaac5 Mayfield (John4, John3, Robert2, Robert1) was born in 1742 in Virginia Colony and died on 20 February 1822 in Lauderdale County AL. He married Margaret Brumette. She was born in 1744 in Virginia and died on 17 November 1814 in Giles County TN.

Notes for Isaac Mayfield

Mayfield - Brumette Migration Group

My research indicates that four Mayfield brothers (Micajah, Isaac, Randolph and Jesse), along with members of the Brumett family, resided in the Cherokee Creek area of Washington County NC in the early 1780's. In the late 1780's these four Mayfields and several of the Brumetts removed to Greenville County SC where they resided on the North Fork of the Saluda River. This area was near the northern border of South Carolina and also near the border of what was then the lands belonging to the Cherokee Nation. In the 1795/1796 time frame, three of the four brothers (Micajah, Isaac and Randolph) removed to Southeastern Kentucky; Jesse Mayfield remained in SC for many years, until, in the early 1820's he removed to McMinn County TN where he died in 1833.

Washington County NC (later TN):

The earliest record for this Isaac Mayfield is from Washington County NC (later became part of TN):

31 Oct 1779: John Brummet enters a 50 acre tract of land on Cherokee Creek joining "Isaac Mayfield's line." [See Entry No. 2102B, Washington County]

Revolutionary War Service:

At the North Carolina State Archives, there is one reference to Isaac Mayfield in the "Specie Certificates Paid into the Comptroller, NC Revolutionary Army Accounts." The reference is from the 1782-83 time frame, and the names of the auditors involved, indicates that Isaac Mayfield was a resident of either Sullivan or Washington County at the time. However, I have never found a reference to any Mayfields as early residents of Sullivan County, but there are many references for Mayfield families in Washington County.

Isaac Mayfield - Vol I, Pg 15, Folio 4.

Greenville County SC:

Isaac Mayfield apparently migrated to South Carolina shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War and settled in the the Ninety-Six Judicial District in an area which in 1786 became Greenville County. A study of the land grants issued to Mayfields in this area after the Revolution fully supports such a move.

A total of six Mayfield land grants were issued for Ninety-Six District after the Revolution but prior to the year 1800. Two of the grants were issued to Isaac Mayfield. These grants, all in the SC Backcountry, are as follows:

Isaac Mayfield - 150 Acres, Ninety-Six District, 02 Mar 1789

Isaac Mayfield - 428 Acres, Ninety-Six District, 02 Jan 1792

The 1790 Federal Census for Greenville County SC:

The 1790 Federal Census for Greenville County SC clearly shows a group of five Mayfield households, including that of Isaac Mayfield, lying in close proximity to each other. The land records of Greenville County indicate that they resided on the North Fork of the Saluda River. These five households are:

1) Jesse Mayfield

2) Isaac Mayfield

3) John Mayfield

4) Randolph Mayfield

5) Mickagah Mayfield

I believe that Jesse, Randolph and Micajah (Mickagah) Mayfield are brothers of Isaac, while John Mayfield is a son - the same John Mayfield who married Mary Wolf.

Removal to KY:

In the 1795/1796 time frame, three of the four brothers (Micajah, Isaac and Randolph) and Isaac's son, John Mayfield (husband of Mary Woolf) removed to Southeastern Kentucky; the fourth brother, Jesse Mayfield, remained in SC for many years, until, in the early 1820's he removed to McMinn County TN where he died in 1833.

Removal to TN and AL:

In about 1812, Isaac Mayfield left Kentucky and probably settled first in Giles County TN. A few years later, in about 1819, he removed across the State Line into Lauderdale County AL to live with his son, Brice M. Mayfield.

Death and Age of Isaac Mayfield and His Wife Margaret:

The date of death and age at time of death for both Isaac and Margaret Mayfield are taken from of the Bible record of their son, Brice Moore Mayfield of Lauderdale County AL, which is summarized in a memo found in the files of the Pulaski County KY Historical Society as follows:

" ... Isaac Mayfield, father of Brice M. Mayfield, departed this life Feb. 20, 1822, in the 80th year of his life.

"Margaret Mayfield, wife of Isaac Mayfield, departed this life Nov. 17, 1814, in her 70th year ... "

I have not seen this Bible nor do I know of its current whereabouts.

Isaac's wife, Margaret Brumette, is apparently the sister of Penelope Brumette, who married Isaac's brother, Jesse Mayfield. who died in McMinn County TN.
